Facebook name change — “Meta” can mark a new beginning of a new genre in technology.
The Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg put the world in shock after the announcement of changing the company’s present name.
Facebook Inc. is now named as “Meta”.
The Meta platform is aimed to bring all the technologies of Facebook Inc. under one single platform. But, hey! If you are Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp users you don’t have to worry as the name will remain the same for these platforms.
"Our apps and their brands aren’t changing either. We’re still the company that designs technology around people,” Zuckerberg said.
What is Facebook’s new name?
Facebook has rebranded its name as “Meta”. It is expected to build a shared virtual environment — “Metaverse” which Facebook believed to be the next destination of mobile internet. The decision is made as a bold step towards the technological development of the company and not being restricted to just social media platforms.
Zuckerberg stated, “Right now our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything we’re doing today, let alone in the future.”
“To reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I’m proud to share that our company is now Meta.” said the Facebook boss.
Why has Facebook's name been changed to Meta?
Because of the advancement of new technologies and the conversion of the internet into virtual reality technology, Facebook has opted to change the name of its parent business to 'Meta.'
Not only that, but the company's major goal for this transformation is to improve the way we connect with our loved ones. It implies that instead of sending messages online, one could feel the physical appearance of the objects (people, location, and shop) with whom one is interacting using virtual reality technology.
What is the meaning of Metaverse?
The idea of metaverse first came into the limelight in the dystopian novel - “Snow Crash” by Neal Stephenson, three decades ago. In layman’s terms, the metaverse is a shared digital reality that is consisted of online games, social media, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) where the user can interact virtually.

Facebook has confirmed the name of the social media app won’t change. Moreover, no new features and layouts would be added as of now. There won’t be any change in how the app is being used. Its other siblings - Instagram and WhatsApp will also follow the same.
Facebook has been steadily promoting the concept of “Metaverse” which it believes to be the next generation of technological landmarks. The company has also announced to hire 10,000 more individuals to implement this technology.
Although Facebook is heavily promoting the concept of “Metaverse” the term is still not understood among the general audiences. So, it’s a matter of time to witness if Facebook’s name change to “Meta” is justified.
